2016 Conference: The Didactics of Chess

The fourth edition of the London Chess and Education Conference will take place on 10-11 December 2016 at the Hilton Kensington Olympia. As usual it coincides with the first weekend of the London Chess Classic held at the Olympia Conference Centre. The theme of the Conference is “The Didactics of Chess”. The event is supported by Chess in Schools and Communities.

    Currently I’m teaching chess to kids n a few adults, N. Sembilan Malaysia; age frm 4yr to 40yr. with more than 25yr of experience I may conclude that it is really high time that chess be a subject in schools. The feed back that I got from some parents are; 1. my kid’s confidence level has increased n more independent. 2. my very quiet n reserved boy is more talkative n social. 3. my son often comes with intelligent ideas n seems to more creative as compared to pre-chess n now speaks better English.

    G.Bernard Shaw once said that 2% of the people think;3% of the people think they think, and 99% of the people would rather die than think.

    Albert Einstein also said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand”

    The above quotes came from the most extraordinary quality of creativity and initiative (2 examples I chose, may include Edison n others).

    How could we develop the concept of initiative/creativity among children?
    In my opinion, the game of chess may help in developing the faculty of initiative in all children irrespective of race and creed.

    Most kids go to school, come home, do their homework play some sports study for their tests eat n sleep. In fact most adults do the same work eat n sleep, nothing creative, only mundane mind.

    As compared to some lucky ones, the home environment allows the development of their creative power, a good example is The Polgar Family.
    Genius can be created.

    We notice today that nations successful in businesses and inventions have this power of initiative/creativity.

    In chess too we come across the concept of ‘initiative’. After analysing a chess position a child is told to decide who has the initiative and decide a course of action. Here we are actually training the child not only to make a decision based upon a situation but also developing creativity to arrive at a favourable position.

    Through individual uniqueness the child comes up with a beautiful position and goes on to win, clearly indicates the power of initiative/creativity. How many of us are actually using this faculty of initiative. Days,weeks,months and years pass by
    we remain the same and unsuccessful.

    The right environment ought to be provided for the development of creativity and initiative for all children. I hope The Conference dwell on this issue and propose to UNESCO to develop the Royal Game in all corners of the world(I did a workshop for parents n teachers, http://unmcignite.com/chess-competition-tamil-schools/)
