At the end of the London Chess and Education Conference 2013 it was announced that Armenia would hold a conference on chess in schools. GM Smbat Lputian, the Director of the Chess Academy of Armenia, has kept to his promise and delivered the event last week in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.
Educationists, chess experts, government officials and scientists from all over the world came together to find out more about the latest developments in Armenia where chess has been compulsory in primary schools since 2011. Children take two chess lessons per week from Year 3 to Year 5. This is the most comprehensive school chess program in the world and participants were keen to learn the first research results.
The prestigious gathering was opened by Armenia´s President Serzh Sargsyan, who is also the Chairman of the Armenian Chess Federation, by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and by GM Smbat Lputian. The event was praised by those who attended. Some of the speakers will also participate in our forthcoming Chess and Mathematics conference.
