This is a tutorial by Fernando. He earned the Psychology Licensure at Autonomus University in Madrid and a Master’s degree in school counseling from Trinity University in Washington, D.C. He is a National Certified Counselor, a National Certified School Counselor, and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the state of Maryland. He currently serves as a guidance counsellor at the JoAnn Leleck Elementary School at Broad Acres in Maryland.

Fernando was a creator of this field with the publication of his 2001 book Teaching Life Skills Through Chess: A Guide for Educators and Counselors, now out-of-print. He came to prominence with his presentation Using Chess in a Counseling/Mentoring Approach for Students (PowerPoint) at the 2007 Chess in the Schools and Communities International Conference in Aberdeen. His recent work is described in the London Chess Conference blog.

Fernando will explain how he uses his Social-Emotional Life Skills Curriculum in the classroom.
